Bouckaert Soenen Fun Cycle Race
On the 29th Of January 2012, a beautiful Sunday morning, Drainmen Services decided to take care of one of the most vital water stations in the “Bouckaert Soenen Fun Cycle “. In addition, Drainmen participated in the cycle race in which we had 2 riders for our team namely, (Gavin Griggs-Drainmen Northern Suburbs Franchisee and Mark Carmichael-Green-Drainmen Supporter). We started early that morning, at 5am and got to our spot and had set up our watering station by 6.30am.
Greg Pascoe (Drainmen Paarl Franchisee) got the whole team quick on our toes in order to start the work at hand and get ready for the coming masses of cyclists. On Tap Paarl supplied the water for the event and delivered right on time. Amongst the competitors there were many other cyclists who were not even participating but just cycling on this beautiful route enjoying the day.
After the race started, we saw the first group of cyclists around 9 30am who was ofcourse part of the elite group. Many more were soon to come, passing without a break for water. Then the Drainmen team had to be ready because the cyclists were beginning to make their first stops for water; our Drainmen water team assisted the cyclists by at times running alongside them and giving them a drink! The temperature dramatically increased to almost 40 degrees which meant this cycle race was about to get a lot harder.
We went from having 10 cyclists at a time to 20 and then to 40 which was a mass number of cyclists stopping in groups. Drainmen Services were quick and got to everyone on time, then we heard that other water points before us were having water shortages and then even we had to begin to take pre-cautions, we phoned On Tap and asked for more water. We tried to make sure every cyclist had enough water to keep themselves hydrated and then the water dripped dry and we had to come up with ideas. We brought out all of our ice out and started filling the cyclists bottles so at least it would melt to water. We phoned On Tap again and they said they would replenish our supply in 10 minutes,. On Tap was doing a brilliant job considering the other water points were out too. The Drainmen team began to make sacrifices, offering our own juice and water to all the cyclists.
The cyclist masses just kept coming and we were running out of options, we were also serving fresh fruit as fast as we could. Kegyne Saunders was doing the chopping and Ross Coetzee was handing out fruit, we were running a tight ship until the pressure came down on us and Kegyne had accidently sliced
We got all the cyclists on their way again and looked after a small group of cyclists that had decided to stop and be picked up. The Drainmen Team encouraged and motivated some cyclists to get back up and finish the race, which they did. Eventually the last cyclist reached us and the emergency van shortly after.
After a brilliant day, being outside and helping out the cyclists, we packed up, cleaned the street of all trace of the day and began our journey home.
We at Drainmen Services would like to give a big thanks to Greg Pascoe(Drainmen Paarl Franchisee), Ross Coetzee(Drainmen Paarl Apprentice), Kegyne Saunders(Drainmen Marketing Division) and Lynne Griggs(Drainmen Promotional Gear) for Setting up the race water point and also for catering to the cyclists. We would also like to thank and congratulate Gavin Griggs(Drainmen Northern Suburbs Franchisee) and Mark Carmichael-Green(Drainmen Supporter) for participating in the race! A fun day all round and once again proving Drainmen Services good team spirit…
