NSRI 4x4 Day

It was a cold and misty morning when our Drainmen team set out to Koeberg Nature Reserve on the West Coast. Opened to the public only once every year for this special event, this well supported day has been named the “NSRI 4x4 Day”. Drainmen Services are proud supporters of the NSRI and have been since 2005 and thus it was a pleasure to support the NSRI in this adventure too. Drainmen’s Project Manager, James Rauch was the team leader for the day and for this event. It was a good choice by David Olivier, Franchisor of Drainmen, for James to be the team leader on this day as James has many years of off-road experience and is well known amongst his peers as “the man with a plan” when it comes to 4x4ing! Upon arrival, all participants were gearing up for a great day out in the Reserve...

We began the day by setting up our site and in a few minutes we were ready in queue for what promised to be an exciting day out in the Koeberg Nature Reserve. We quickly ate breakfast and had our coffee in preparation for the long journey ahead of us.

The sun began to shine beneath the clouds as we started on the path. At first the path was smooth and easy going so we all seemed to cruise quite comfortably through, then the mounds and bumps began, of course these were minor, our 2 Toyota’s made minimal effort to make it through this obstacle and the course, even the old Suzuki 4x4 made short work of obstacles that even some Land Rovers could not make over. (No brand preference here we assure you  we love Landies too ; )

We made our first stop after some time and all enjoyed a drink and some chat about the journey so far, we had now past the bush area and reached the beautiful white glistening dunes.

We reached our first treacherous uphill which was a lot steeper than we had anticipated. Proudly wearing the Drainmen brand on ourselves and on our 4x4’s, we made it over in no time. Many 4x4’s had to attempt this part of the course a few times before success. But as in our scope of day to day work, there was no problem we could not solve and obstacle we could not challenge through to success!

The obstacles did not cease, around every corner there was a new challenge. We flew past the hills and then came an obstacle that one of our dedicated drivers ‘Johan Sadie’in the ‘Drainmen Hilux’ had a feeling we would not be able to fully tackle in the Toyota but the team gave the needed inspiration and the challenge was accepted !

All clinching our teeth we courageously bolted up this hill, one of the steepest climbs in the dunes, and flew over it. Many heads were turned as we landed on top of this high sand dune, with so much pressure our left back tire dislodged from the rim ! Such is our aspiration to get over any challenge – whether work related or just pure team work challengers..

Likened to our ‘Team Drainmen Racing’ crew, we all got out fixed the tire and in no time were back on the course. We as the Drainmen Team did not let one challenge pass us that day, even when the little Suzuki had to tackle the infamous ‘Radiator Hill’.

We all thoroughly enjoyed this day and give a great thanks to this company that gives us the chance to participate in these events, proving work and fun can be mixed together. Whether on an oval track with our ‘Team Drainmen Racing’, having Off Road Fun or working in the field as professional plumbers we conquer all challenges and hurdles. We would like to thank Mr Rhine Barnes, the NSRI official co-coordinator and his team for their hard work in planning this successful day and to all who made this fun day possible. Please support the NSRI as they endeavour to save lives and make a difference for our communities in and around South Africa! Their work many a times goes unnoticed but it is a vital and necessary work which is why we, viewing our plumbing and drainage work the same, support the National Sea Rescue Institute.
