I never thought I could find plumbing (that’s the conventional type, of course) interesting, but I saw two very skilled guys at their trade today – and it was a pleasure to watch. We had had a toilet drainage problem for a long period and nobody in the industry seemed to be able to fix it. We were on the point of giving up, but decided to try Drainmen Services as a last resort. Billy and Allouise from Drainmen came along at exactly at 0915 as scheduled and were consummate professionals. They proceeded to:

1. Unblock the problem drain from the manhole side using normal extensions and routers

2. Test all 4 toilets in the house to check how they flowed and where they fed into the main drain

3. Insert the camera down the “problem toilet” below the stairwell

4. Identify a very tricky “system” of “soft roots” growing in about a 0.5m length of the pipe at a joint in a particular section before it joins the main pipe coming down from the upstairs toilets.

5. Use an electronic sensor to pinpoint the exact location of the camera at the point it encountered the root system

6. Attempt to remove the roots with a “soft router” but, predictably, the router couldn’t grip onto the roots and pull them out. The roots were too soft to be taken out, but significant enough to catch toilet paper and waste and cause a blockage after 3 or 4 flushes. Also, they were growing upwards (i.e. towards the toilet) so they would catch the waste rather than allow it to flow by.

7. There were three options left to try to solve the problem:

a. Sulphuric Acid

b. Blast with a specialised hose under huge pressure

c. Dig under the loo and into the new room (a big job).

8. They did option b. first (using a specialised hose and a generator from the lorry) and it worked beautifully. When the camera was re-inserted, the roots had been cleaned out completely!

The roots will grow back over time (approx. 1 year I guess) – but my strong view is that we simply treat the symptoms now that we know exactly where the problem is.

I would just like to send a short thank you note for the tidy work that was done whilst repairing our leaking shower floor. The two gentlemen that did the repair did a brilliant job and left no mess. I was amazed to see the progress without finding one speck of dust after they left.

One is always dubious when builders come to do work at your home, because you expect a mess and dust in places that aren’t even effected by the renovations, but in this case it was the tidiest job I’d ever seen.

A big thanks to Gavin and his team (in particular Chad) who helped me out last week and on Monday.

On Thursday morning I contacted Greg to help me with my washing machine and a leaking toilet. I have used Drainmen a few times, and so it was nice that they knew who I was when I called. Chad came out at midday and sorted me out. Not TWO hours later, a pipe burst in my other toilet. I wanted to weep.

I called the guys back and they were back again to sort me out, and they didn’t charge me for the second call out, which was so kind of them. I noticed that the flush mechanism in the toilet wasn’t working 100% and they came out again on Monday to sort it out. And then today Chad called to follow up that everything was working fine. AWESOME service!!

And this is not the first time Gavin and his team have come to my rescue (a few burst geysers, leaking roofs, burst pipes…. and each time they will make a plan to get to me that day to help me out. Fantastic, so impressed.
